Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy

Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) is a surgical procedure by means of laparoscopic techniques and tools to remove the uterus and ovaries and/or fallopian tubes through the vagina. It is a minimally invasive procedure. As we know, abdominal hysterectomy is associated with higher postoperative discomfort and a longer recovery period than for a vaginal procedure. Another benefit of the LAVH may be the removal of the ovaries and tubes which sometimes cannot be easily removed with a vaginal hysterectomy.

This does not indicate that all hysterectomies should or could be done by LAVH. There are a few conditions that will demand abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. Actually, a vaginal hysterectomy by itself, if indicated, is less expensive, less time consuming and can be less dangerous.

LAVH- How is it done?

LAVH is performed by some small abdominal incisions and through these small incisions small metal tubes known as “trocars” are inserted. They provide passage for a laparoscope (by which the organs are viewed on a special TV-like screen) and other microsurgical tools. Some healthcare providers may use a robotic surgical system to help with this type of hysterectomy.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

  • LAVH procedure is best for benign conditions that lead to hysterectomy when the uterus is not outsized and it is often the best approach for uterine prolapse.
  • Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy also treats other gynaecological ailments like Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, Endometriosis, Uterine Cancer etc
  • For patients who have suspected or known pelvic scar tissue or endometriosis (Endometriosis is the third most common reason for hysterectomy), before performing a vaginal hysterectomy, laparoscopic surgery allows the surgeon to remove the scarred tissue with the laparoscope and thereby reducing the risk associated with the injury to the bladder or intestines during surgery.

  • For patients who have larger fibroids, laparoscopic hysterectomy permits the surgeon to separate the blood vessels to the uterus while screening them through the laparoscope
  • You will have only small incisions (1/2 inch) in your abdomen. This means you will probably have less post-operative complications like wound infection and adhesion.
  • Recuperation time is usually faster when the uterus is removed through the vagina instead of through a cut in the belly.
  • This is less physically traumatic and vaginal procedure does not leave a large visible scar. (You may have very small scars from the 3 or 4 tiny cuts in your abdomen that are used to place tools into your abdomen.)
