The disorder of Hypertension in Pregnancy is a major cause of maternal, fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Hypertension is the most common medical problem in pregnancy.
Women with hypertension in pregnancy have a higher risk of complications such as:
- Abruptio placentae.
- Cerebrovascular accident.
- Disseminated intravascular coagulations.
- Intrauterine growth restrictions.
- Prematurity.
- Intrauterine death.
Hypertension which occurs during pregnancy are:
- Gestational hypertension - Pregnancy-induced hypertension which develops after 20 weeks of gestation. It may be either transient hypertension of pregnancy or chronic hypertension and it cannot identified until the latter half of pregnancy.
- Pre-eclampsia- Pregnancy-induced hypertension along with proteinuria or oedema or both.
- Eclampsia – It is the occurrence of one or more convulsions superimposed on pre-eclampsia.
Management will mainly depend on the woman's BP, gestational age and blood flow in the placenta. Non-pharmacological management is recommended for most of the women but is highly not recommended when there is the presence of any kind of associated maternal and fetal risk factors. Non-pharmacological management will include close supervision, limitation of activities and some bed rest in the left lateral position.
