Infertility Treatment Options

Infertility is an inability to a female who cannot carry a pregnancy to full term. Some fertility issues are simply treated than others. Normally, woman after age 35, her possibility of having a baby decrease and chances of miscarriage goes up.

Treatments for fertility problems in women depend on what may be keeping the woman from getting pregnant. Sometime the cause isn't known.
If doctor can't detect causes for infertility, take the treatments include hormone injections and insemination.


Main three types of fertility treatments are,

  • Medicines to assist fertility
  • Surgical procedures
  • Assisted conception
Medicines to Assist Fertility 

These are usually recommend for women, although in some cases they may also be prescribed for men.
  • Clomifene It helps to encourage ovulation in women who do not ovulate regularly or who cannot ovulate at all.
  • Tamoxifen It is an alternative to clomifene that may be offered to women with ovulation issues.
  • MetforminIt is specially beneficial for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • GonadotrophinsIt can help stimulate ovulation in women and may also improve fertility in men.
Surgical Procedures

Surgery may be an option for infertility issues include, fallopian tube problems, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and fibroids.
If you need surgery, either conventional open surgery or keyhole surgery may be offered.

Keyhole surgery (Laparoscopy)

It is a less invasive method and scarring is minimised. Laparoscopy surgery uses a 1cm cut in the umbilicus (tummy button) and two or three smaller cuts close to the pubic hair line. This type of surgery normally requires a general anaesthetic. 

Conventional Surgery

It uses a ‘bikini-line’ cut about 10 cm long. This type of surgery usually need a general anaesthetic.

Some Female Surgical Options are,

Hysteroscopy - Doctor will use a narrow fiberoptic telescope inserted into your uterus through your cervix, to look for and sometimes remove adhesions inside your uterus.

Fallopian Tube Sterilization Reversal (Reanastomosis) - This procedure performed to reconnect two ends of the fallopian tubes in an attempt to reverse sterilization.

Hydrosalpinx Removal - A hydrosalpinx is an obstructed fallopian tube that leads to an accumulation of fluid. Removal of the affected tube can increase IVF success rates.

Some Male Surgical Options are,

Testicular Biopsy - Several small pieces of testicular tissue are removed and examined for sperm which can be used in fertility procedures.

Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) - A needle biopsy of the testicle in which a sample of tissue is taken directly from the testis and used to extract sperm for IVF or ICSI.

Percutaneous Sperm Aspiration (PESA) - A needle inserted into the epididymis in an effort to locate and aspirate a pocket of sperm.

Vasectomy Reversal - It is done to reverse a previous vasectomy and restore the male's ability to release sperm into his semen from the testicles.

Assisted Conception

Most doctors advise reserving assisted conception method as a last step for having a baby.
General assisted conception treatments involve:

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)Sperm are inserted directly into the uterus when ovulate.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Eggs are gathered from your ovaries and combined with your spouse's sperm in a laboratory dish. The resulting embryos are transplanted to your uterus.

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) : Your eggs are removed, mixed together with your spouse's sperm in a dish in a laboratory, then placed into your fallopian tubes. Fertilisation happens inside your body and the embryo implants naturally.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) : A single sperm is injected directly into a single egg in the laboratory and the resulting embryo is transplanted into your uterus.

Surrogacy : another woman carries your embryo, or a donor embryo, to term and gives the baby to you after birth.
