Benefits of IVF over other treatments

Almost 7 out of 10 couples worldwide are facing infertility issues. Some reasons are known whereas some are unknown. One of the most common reason is blocked fallopian tube and PCOS.

IVF or In-Vitro Fertilization has been a very successful method for couples with these kinds of fertility issues. It is the process in which egg cells are fertilized by the sperm cells outside the body, ie, in the laboratory. The treatment involves controlling the ovulatory process, drawing the eggs and the sperm from the couples and then fertilize them in a fluid medium. After the resulting embryo is formed it is passed directly into the woman’s uterus.

Why IVF is better than other assisted reproductive technology?

Before visiting a fertility Centre in Pondicherry, here are some things you should know about IVF.

IVF was introduced in 1978 and since then it has helped millions of couples to give birth to a baby. When other reproductive assisted technologies have failed in some cases, IVF has worked successfully. Here are some reasons why IVF is so popular:

  • IVF can be used by any couple. It can be used by surrogate mothers, same-sex couples or women who are unable to carry a baby full term.
  • In the case of IVF, a couple can use donated egg or sperms to achieve better results. Using a better quality egg or sperm increases the chance of getting pregnant.
  • Sometimes more than 1 embryo is formed through this process. If one of them fails to grow, others are kept reserved.
  • A genetic screening test is conducted through the IVF process. It increases the chances of a healthy baby. The genetic test also reduces the chances of miscarriages.
  • As multiple cycles can be used in this treatment, the chances of getting pregnant increases and live birth increases.

Laparoscopic assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)

Vaginal Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through the vagina. In some conditions the fallopian tubes and ovaries are also removed.

The most common medical conditions for doing a hysterectomy includes the following:
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Benign fibroid tumors of the uterus
  • Genital prolapse
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Tumors
  • Uterine cancer which is uncommon

What is Laparoscopic assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)?

LAVH is a surgical procedure which uses a laparoscope to guide the removal of the uterus through the birth canal (Vagina). Whereas the procedure called a laparoscopic hysterectomy is performed by using a laparoscope and other instruments inserted through tiny abdominal incisions and the uterus, fallopian tubes etc are removed in tiny portions.

In some cases, a laparoscopic hysterectomy may be sufficient and in other cases and abdominal hysterectomy or a vaginal hysterectomy without a laparoscopy is indicated. The surgeon determines the procedure for the patient based upon the reason for hysterectomy and the condition of the patient.

How is LAHV performed?

In this procedure of LAVH slender metal tubes so called Trocars are inserted to provide passage for a laparoscope and other micro-surgical instruments by making several small incisions in the abdominal wall . The camera which is attached to the laparoscope provides images continuously and that is projected and magnified onto a television screen for viewing.
During LAVH, the uterus, the Fallopian tubes (if to be removed) is detached from the ligaments that attach it to other structures in the pelvis using the laparoscopic tools. Then the organs and tissue are removed through an incision made in the vagina.

The advantages of LAVH includes the following:

  • The incisions in LAVH are relatively small.
  • The scars, pain and recovery time are comparatively less than with an abdominal hysterectomy
  • LAVH is less physical traumatic
  • LAVH is feasible
  • Women generally recover faster after LAVH compared with women who have abdominal hysterectomy.

IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation has been in the field of infertility treatment for quite some time. However with the latest advancements, they have been incorporated with a lot of techniques, to effectively increase the success rate and overall efficiency. They are now capable of addressing a wide range of fertilisation irregularities including insufficiency of eggs or sperm count.

Many practices of infertility treatments are still frowned upon by a margin of our society due to the lack of awareness associated with them. A clear understanding of the different types of artificial fertilisation procedures can be clearly imbibed with the video presented here. Take a few minutes to get to know, what is involved in the magic of fertilisation and implantation.

Addressing the various limitations of fertilisation

The various limitations of fertilisation, faced by couples affected by infertility can be addressed by the following techniques: -
In case of women with ovary disorders, who are unable to produce eggs, donor eggs can be used for fertilisation. Very low or no sperm count can be addressed by donor sperms preserved by methods of cryopreservation. Embryo adoption is another method used to address lack of successful fertilisation in couples.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a procedure used when the low sperm count or poor quality of sperm results in failed fertilisation. ICSI involves directly injecting the sperm into the egg during the fertilisation phase of IVF.

Artificial reproduction techniques are often deemed to be tough on pockets. However, with a slight alteration in the standard procedures, they can be customised to the needs of the patient. Some of these patient friendly techniques include Intravaginal Culture, Natural Cycle IVF, In Vitro Maturation and Transport IVF. They are explained in detail in the video.

When couples are having sex with more than one year  and is still able to conceive are infertile.  Either of two or both the partners are responsible. These  are some of main causes of infertility.

Ovulation Problem

Ovulation problem means from the ovary release of mature eggs is not possible in case of females. the woman feeling this problem may have irregular periods due to hormones. In Order to correct this problem doctors mainly prescribe fertility drugs.

Egg Quality

The eggs released  from females during ovulation period must be of good quality. sometimes the eggs that are released may damaged and it inhibits pregnancy. Here the female partner gets the problem of conceiving. This occurs mainly in the mid ages around 30-40. The rectify method to this problem is to use donor eggs.

Endometriosis

This is one of the main factors for infertility in females.  Normally a woman gets period after 28 days. This may vary due to several reasons.  Endometriosis is a condition in which uterine tissues  grow outside the uterus and lean at wrong position. it can lead to several problems such as pain in abdomen, painful periods etc. By laparoscopic surgery this problem can be solved. In some cases In Vitro fertilization may doctor recommends.

Blockage in the tubes

In males main fertility problem arises due to blockage in the tube( vas deferens), a condition in which blockage in the epididymis. The best recovery method to male infertility is Intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment(ICSI). In this process sperm is injected directly into the female reproductive organ.

Other problems in males are low sperm count, low sperm quality and low sperm motility. in this condition doctor is  given fertility drugs for concerned problems.

Though many people still believe that infertility is largely a female problem. But the truth shows differently. Both women and men easily contribute to this problem. So it is recommended that medical assistance is necessary for the delivery of a healthy baby.
