Intrauterine Insemination and Unexplained infertility

Most couple have a strong desire to bear a child at some point in their life. In normal cases, a couple can conceive within one year of having frequent or unprotected sex. When no results are seen within one year, the couple must go for fertility tests. After the tests, if no infertility issues are found in both the partners then it is referred to as “unexplained infertility”. In these cases, doctors often suggest the couple to have Timed sexual intercourse at the time of ovulation for few months. If these subsequent trials have failed, then IUI and fertility drugs are used to get pregnant.

IUI or Intrauterine Insemination is the next step of management in unexplained infertility

Intrauterine Insemination is a procedure which involves injecting or inseminating processed sperm into women's uterus around the time of ovulation. The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes, thereby increasing the chances of fertilization. IUI cycles are also co-ordinated in combination with fertility drugs so that they stimulate the ovaries and increase the count of eggs.

Before the procedure, a woman is evaluated for infection, hormonal imbalances and other structural problems. Insemination is done at the time of ovulation, usually within 24-36 hours after fertility medicines are given to stimulate ovulation. Semen collected from the partner is washed at the lab to separate seminal fluid. A soft catheter is used to deposit the sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation. IUI process increases the number of sperm inserted in the uterus and thus increases the possibility of conception. If the sperm fertilizes eggs, then pregnancy happens. IUI is a simple procedure which takes only around 15 to 20 minutes.

Pros and Cons of Gynaecological Surgeries

The procedure for gynaecological surgeries has evolved a lot in the past few years. Today, most gynaecological surgeries are assisted with laparoscopy. Previously laparoscopy was used in the only diagnosis and tubal ligations but today this tool is used in several gynaecological surgeries. Starting from the removal of ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts or treatment of endometriosis, laparoscopy has been an effective treatment option for all these critical surgeries.

What are the pros of Laparoscopic-assisted gynaecological surgeries?

Unlike open surgeries, advanced gynaecological surgeries have several benefits.
  • Minimally invasive process- Laparoscopic gynaecological surgeries involve incisions, but the cuts are very small and the marks usually fade away within a short period of time. Being a minimally invasive process, it involves very little pain and discomfort.
  • Increases patient’s safety- Any gynaecological surgery that is laparoscopy-assisted involves little risks. Well, to be frank, it's not that the patient is completely in a risk-free zone, but when compared to laparotomy, the risk is less.
  • Faster recovery- Previously when women used to go through gynaecological surgeries, it used to take a lot of time to recover and get back to their familial or professional life. But laparoscopy gynaecological surgeries allow the patients to get back to normal life within a short period of time. Even the hospital stay is minimal.
  • Affordable- Gynaecological surgeries these days are affordable as the patient do not have to stay in the hospital for a prolonged period, thus reducing the bill amount.

What are the cons?

Though the modern day gynaecological surgeries are less risky and more effective, they still carry certain risks:
  • Uterine perforation is one of the potential complications that are associated with injury to surrounding blood vessels.
  • There is a chance of urinary tract and bladder injury. Risk factors for urinary infection may include pelvic organ Prolapse and malignant disease.
