Infertility often creates one of the most distressing life crisis that a couple has ever experienced together. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is the best treatment for certain kinds of fertility problems.
IVF may be used to overcome female infertility in the woman due to problems of the fallopian tube, making fertilisation in vivo difficult. It may also assist in male infertility, where there is a defect in sperm quality.

In IVF, fertilisation happens outside the woman’s body. A woman’s eggs are surgically removed and fertilised in a laboratory using sperm . Next the fertilised egg, called an embryo, is surgically implanted into the woman's womb.
IVF -PROCEDURE
IVF Treatment usually involves the following steps:
Women are given a drug (generally in the form of a daily injection) for about two weeks, which suppresses their natural menstrual cycle.
Step 2 - Super ovulation
Fertility drugs containing the fertility hormone FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), are administered to the woman. FSH makes the ovaries produce more eggs than normal. Vaginal ultrasound scans can monitor the process in the ovaries.
Step 3 - Retrieving the eggs
The eggs are collected through a minor surgical procedure known as "follicular aspiration". A very thin needle is inserted through the vagina and into an ovary. The needle - which is connected to a suction device - sucks the eggs out. This process is repeated for each ovary.
Step 4. Fertilising the eggs
Collected eggs are mixed with your partner’s or the donor’s sperm and cultured in the laboratory for 16–20 hours. They are then checked to see if any have fertilised. Those that have been fertilised (now called embryos) are grown in the laboratory incubator for another one - two days before being checked again. The best one or two embryos will then be chosen for transfer.
After egg collection, you are given medication to help prepare the lining of the womb for embryo transfer. This is given as pessaries, injection or gel.
